I'm up, at 4:30 in the morning.
Why? You ask.
Well, I'll tell you why. About 30 minutes ago, I was rudely awakened by a deafening crash.
I leaped from my warm bed, thinking an intruder had entered my home.
I should have known better.
I entered my bathroom and there was glass everywhere, and in the middle of it stood my cat, licking up the water all over the tile floor and purring loudly.
I grabbed some paper towels and a broom and proceeded to pick up the mess. I then proceeded to wake each member of my family to ask them to avoid the area until I can vacuum at the crack of dawn.
Like the glass, I might have reached my breaking point.
Owning 3 dogs and a cat is starting to get to me.
(Okay, it's been getting to me for a long time, but I'm finally admitting it.)
I love them so much.
Too much.
But cleaning up the hair, poop, and throw up is wearing me down.
Throw in the vet bills, nail trimming, brushing, meds, helping my elderly Lab up and down the stairs as well as cleaning up the garbage every time my Dachshund gets in the trash and getting yelled at by my husband each time the Pug jumps on the couch and it really gets ugly. (Yes, it's a run on sentence, I know...cut me a break...I'm TIRED!!!)
Oh, have I mentioned finding someone to care for this menagerie every time we go away? Not an easy task, but easier than the pain I feel if I board them all for a week.
CHA CHING!!
Oh yes, I forgot to tell you about the humiliation of running up and down my street with a hot dog if one of them gets out and tries to run down a busy road, or the screams of scared children who are afraid of dogs and come to visit our home.
Do I sound bitter?
I'm really not, because my love for them makes it all worth it.
But I am tired.
Very, very tired.
I guess nothing good comes easy.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go clean out the litter box.
(Unless one of the dogs gets hungry and beats me to it.)
Thanks for listening.

I hear ya! I have two dogs and two cats. None of them were my idea, but guess who does the bulk of care and upkeep. I love each of them dearly too, but dang they are such high maintenance.
I have no pets, I've never had any and I never plan to - all because of what you just described. thank god for allergies :)
This is EXACTLY how I feel!! I'm so glad that someone else knows what I'm going through and how I feel. However, I would get rid of 2 dogs and the cat if I could find great homes for them. Homes that I know that they'd stay in til they draw their last breath.
It's very frustrating.
Funny, I could say these exact same things about my two girls and a boy. ;)
Kids, pets, husbands. They're messy, smelly, and often in the way. But...we love 'em. ;)
Ain't that the truth. 2 dogs and 1 cat (was 2 cats until our old one passed away last week). How come the dogs wait until I get comfortable on the couch and engaged in the TV when they decide to let me know they need to go out!
Wow...I could never do it! I barely want the one dog that my family wants. I am putting it off and putting it off because I don't like cleaning up after kids much less pets.
You are a better woman that I am!
My days sound a lot like that and I only have ONE dog, Cooper!
It may be an age thing too. I love my animals but am over all that cleaning up, vet bills and what not.
We want our house back!!!
this post would have been much more useful about 10 weeks ago, when, during a momentary lapse in judgement, I thought it would be a great idea to get a puppy.
Love him to death, but wow, he is a pain in the ass. Haven't had a dog in over 9 years, why, why, why,....
I can totally relate.
Our cat had to be put down a few months ago. Up until that time it was 24 hour care for the kitty. Carrying her to and fro (to the litter box) $100 a month for meds, a $1200 operation. That convinced me not to get another cat once she went on her way to cat heaven. I've stuck to that one. No new cats.
Now, about my 2 dogs. They are beautiful golden retrievers that I love and adore. Problem is they shed enough hair to make a Pomeranian every day. It's ugly.
I have denied unexpected visitors access to my home at times due to the furry situation in the foyer. EMBARASSING.
It is super challenging planning my day around them. The pooping, the eating, the ball throwing. It's really worse than having kids because at least kids grow up and find something better to do with their time than to pester you to play with them all day.
I love my dogs, more than I should (per my husband),but there are days when I'm feeling just like you are when I realize it's a REALLY good thing they are so stinking cute.
Hang in there...
